With just a small amount of cash to his name, Jim Penman founded a part-time lawn-mowing income while earning a degree in university. After this, he began Balwyn Gardening, afterwards renamed Jim’s Mowing, as a growing business in the early 80′s. The Jim’s Mowing system proved successful enough to be copied over other franchises, with the Jim’s Group creating departments for all manner of family and business services between 1994 and the present day. He originally planned merely at hiring subcontractors, but his company grew and Jim slowly started to specialize in the founding and selling of lawn mowing routes – more than a hundred after a few years.
After this, Jim Penman franchised his business and since that time the increase of Jim’s company has been fast. The change to franchising began from a desire to provide great customer service, and with all the threat of competition from the entrance of VIP Home Services.
Starting from a small beginning, initially with the thought of making “a few bucks” by cutting other people’s yards, Jim’s Mowing has grown into Australia’s largest lawn mowing franchise. The franchise proved amazingly successful, with 60 Franchisees running by the closing of the first year and a presence in all states in Australia shortly after. From being small and comparatively unknown, it has become the biggest and best known yard mowing business on the planet.
The cleaning franchise was started after then, and was then to be followed by dog wash, fencing, handyman and around a dozen different departments that now were located in Australia, New Zealand, Canada as well as the United Kingdom. Lately, Jim’s has started a number of new departments. All these are managed with seasoned people supplying their practical expertise and Jim’s focusing on the management and franchising side. It’s been a tremendously successful decision. A dedication to serving customer saw this business increase at a rapid rate having more clients than a single man could efficiently manage, leading Jim to commence franchising in 1989.
